Help with my daughter's room.

October 12, 2013 in Design Dilemma
My twenty three year old daughter lives with me and I would like to get her room updated for her birthday in November. She has been somewhat helpful. She loves purple. I would like to blend her room with the hallway bathroom which was redone this past summer. There is a white dresser which will stay and a black bookshelf which I would like to keep and possible paint to another color. I would like to paint the walls purple but was thinking a purple on the gray side. Her floor will be redone to match my room and the hallway. The room also has a closet and one window.
Need new paint color(purple family), comforter, curtains, rug, nightstands and bed. Promise to be quick, decisive with minimal comments.

Angela I think you could incorporate additional modern elements and the funky one could work. I think the funky one with the zebra rug maybe the best option. In addition things like a more modern layout of the pillows, instead of layered maybe stacked? Perhaps others could weigh in.

Wondering how the rug would look if you turn the rug the other direction, run it long ways with the length of the bed starting just beyond the nightstand and let it extend beyond the bottom of the bed. Tuck it under the side of the bed about halfway or so. I think the room is coming along quite well! I think once it's all put together, you won't even notice the size of the nightstand.

I color matched the Stripe in the Duvet to the Mature Grape. I think the best thing to do might be take the duvet to SW and color match that stripe in the duvet at the store. Online is subject to what ever color the monitor interrupts. When I did my bedroom ceiling (the second time) the color match was the same online and in the store. I think it all depends.

Margaret -- I think I might prefer something closer to the color of the rug (the cream color, not the grey). What do you think?

What brings me here are these... I put those two colors into the original photo -- reason for it that I think the colors in Angela's photos are off because of the lighting -- so I am wondering if this might be a more accurate representation of the true colors of the bedding.

In doing this, assuming this photo is truer in color, I'm not really digging neither plum nor grape... Angela should definitely take a pillow with her to Sherwin and get the best possible matches, it might turn out to be none of these. So hard to match color from photos, even good ones.

That said..... I REALLY like the cream color in this room. And it SEEMS similar to the cream color in the rug.

What do you think?

Here's why it's concerning... if you had to pick a color to match the drape in this photo, what would be looking for? Grey/blue? That's what I'd be looking for. In reality, this drape is BROWN!! And this is a professional photo....

We can get a close approximation to the tone of the color for the room (ie: a blue purple vs a redder purple), but you won't truly know until you go there with the actual color and match to that.

Take everything you can (though it might be hard to haul the rug!)

Yes-that is not a good representation of the duvet, when I open the packaging I thought they had sent me the wrong duvet according to the picture. The bottom stripe is way off but I am going now so will see what I come up with. Dragging a 5 by 8 rug ought to be fun. So you think I should go with the beige from the rug for accent walls.

Ugh, I hate when that happens! Anyhow... I'm thinking a cream color... it's hard to say because I can't see the rug. It could be a totally different color from how it looks on screen. But it will help you decide.

And at least you have two colors to look at as a starting point. They might be perfect. Maybe not.

I like the Dune White you mentioned, but again, you have to put all the actual swatches side by side with the items from the room, and see how it looks.

I'm sure the SW person will be happy to help you choose, too.

Maybe... but creme is pretty much a go with everything kind of color. There is going to be some pick up of the feature wall color in whatever other color you chose, as well, just from reflected light.

Greys are nice, often they have a purple undertone to them which may be be good, but it should just be a hint of grey.

I wish I were there to help you in person. I am looking forward to seeing what you come back with. It will be great!

SW Dramatic Violet. The paints will likely all look different in-store than they do on monitor, so all these paint names are only good as a guideline, Angela. I picked the colour that best highlighted the middle stripe, and is light enough to let the headboard show off, as well. Whichever idea you like may show up as a different name on the paint card, or may be customized, if the monitor shots are too different than reality.

Blackberry and Quitox Plum were definitely too dark. Mature Grape too purple if there is such a thing.
Grape Harvest was a good match.

Well, I am ordering them now along with curtain rods but I can put a strip of color on the side. I did like the West Elm ones but the price would have doubled plus JCP is local so if they don't fit then I can return them since I am the queen at returning. My daughter likes the funky lamp and especially since I am getting a desk think that it fits better anyway.

Do the light colored walls first. Tape your trim out and everything else that you don't want painted. Cut in the corners and the baseboard, around windows and outlets. Get two coats on the wall in the light color. Let that dry for a few days and then do the feature wall.

Tape is your friend... it is hard to get a clean edge where the two walls meet, so what I do is use Frog Tape, it's more expensive than regular tape but it prevents paint bleed and if you tape the corner carefully, you'll have a nice clean edge when you take the tape off (which you should do about 15 minutes after your final coat.).

I can cut by hand, but I am such a perfectionist, I find I'm happier when I tape.

Try not to get paint on the ceiling, but it will happen (and I see it has from previous paintings). The paint store (should) sell tiny cans of ceiling white you can use to touch up those spots.

Those colors are very nice Angela - the gray and mixed berries. I'm not very experienced with painting, but I like Kimdee's suggestions. We spent hours and hours on my one accent wall but the careful attention to detail was worth it even though it was a long tiring day for just one wall.

But not sure if any of these will require a dilemma, well maybe to pick the size of crown molding. LOL

I think so Margo, was kind of afraid but went with it. I am still struggling with the purple, it was too dark so I lighten and it then was too light. Went back yesterday and he basically told me that should never do that Because it really messes up the color.

As for the bookshelf, you could paint it white, and paint the back of it with the leftover Mixed Berries.

If you want to paint them purple, please just do the raised panel part purple, the rest white. That would be way too much purple, and just painting the panel would be accent enough!

I just came across this discussion and wow the room is really coming together. The bed and walls look fantastic - the room looks calm the way a bedroom should be (imo) but still interesting, like there's personality - it feels like a room that you can put your personal stamp on by living in it, if you see what I mean.

With that in mind - do you have to pick all of the artwork? Does she not want to? Or are there any favorite photos from when she was younger that you could be creative with? I don't think I'd want a photo of myself as a kid up on my wall, but there might be elements in the photo that could be blown up or used as inspiration, like the location or something about what she was wearing - something that will reference the photo and the memory without actually being a picture of her on the wall?

Piratefoxy- honestly you are so right and art is the one thing that she will pick for the room. I did find a pic of Boston Skyline that she liked because it represented the place that we lived the longest. Friendship, relationship, womanhood and a lot more was a first for her living there.

I actually moved back in with my parents after moving out and living in England for quite some time, and I have to say I really appreciated it. I was also studying, and it was so nice to not have to worry about making rent or having enough for utilities when I discovered that a required textbook was stupidly expensive or a semester turned out to be particularly grueling and limited time available to work. I still have some student loans, but they are so much less than if I'd had to borrow more to make ends meet because of additional living expenses. (And way cheaper for my parents than renting me somewhere - they were already paying for the house anyway.)

(Then just before I graduated, my mother was diagnosed with cancer and so I didn't move out anyway because I stuck around to help her, so it was good with all that upheaval with the diagnosis that I was already there. Sometimes things work out, I guess?)

I think they both work well enough that you could see which one your daughter likes better? On my laptop the color of the wavy one looks a bit off compared to the rug, but that can easily be the laptop and the colors look different in person.

Pirate the wavy one is creamier/beiger than the ikat, think I said that earlier. The ikat colors are perfect match with the rug. The grey in the rug ten to pick up the purple of the bedding so it also sometimes dont look grey enough.

Some changes while I've been gone!
With all your greys in the same tonal range, the effect of adding grey patterns threatens to make the room appear dingy. For patterned curtains, I'd look for some that play off the various colour blocks you've formed, rather than try to match greys. I have just a minute, but will see what I can find by way of example.

These are Target's Mudhut line, and carry colours you have in the room, but in different shades. The shades are separated enough from eachother, as well as items in the room that they reference, that the eye may read some as a match, and others as depth of tone.

Can you pull the rug just a bit further toward the foot of the bed so when you put the nightstand in place the rug won't be under it? Other than that, I think it looks nice as you have it.

Hmm. I've seen some rugs styled so that the nightstands aren't sitting on the rug - if you did that and pulled it away from the wall at the head of the bed a bit, you'd get a wider 'frame' of rug at the foot of the bed which you might prefer visually? Though given the unusual position of the bed I think it looks nice as it is.

I suppose you could move the rug under the bed further, but I like how much is exposed on the long side of the bed because it just looks comfortable - plenty of nice rug to stand on when getting in and out of bed. :)

You know what Nancy are you thinking there should be some purple in curtain. I wonder if this would be the time to get some material and have the curtains made., the one studio posted is very bohemian but I think too colorful for the room?

I still like the Ikat. Please don't get mad at me, because I know it's out of your hands, but I think you're having trouble putting everything together because of the position of the bed and the small nightstand. Everything looks good together, it's the space planning that's off. That being said, the room must make the inhabitant happy, so your hands are tied at this point. You are a great mom making a beautiful environment for your daughter!

I think you're on to something about having curtains made. The ones Studio posted are too much, but maybe you could find a more subtle fabric. Question is, how much time do you want to invest looking for fabric?

The first is an embroidered fabric on ivory with silver and purple threads, and the second is an ikat with gray and tan(?) on a natural background--maybe too dark.

I think that right now, either of the curtain options you have would work - it's really being nitpicky to vote one over the other, neither one is 'oh my god, do not put that in the room.' Likewise the rug is lovely, and while the positioning isn't ideal from a 'rug rules' point of view, it doesn't to my eye look horrible, and the room has a non-standard layout with the bed against the wall so the 'rug rules' can't fully apply anyway.

Plus, right now you're focusing on every little detail instead of the overall picture - once you have some more accessories and she's really living in the room, I doubt most people will even think about the exact positioning of the rug and most of them certainly won't know about the various curtain options - they'll just think it looks like a lovely bedroom, calm but with personality, and how you can see how much care went into making it so nice.

How wide is one curtain when open - about a foot and a half or so? Whatever that width, mount the rod so when the curtains are open, only about an inch of each side of the window is covered by the open curtain, making the window look bigger and letting in as much light as possible. Are you raising it too so the curtains just touch the floor?

I don't think you should go more than six inches beyond the window with the rod, the curtains are obstructed by the dresser and the bed.

You have a few options from the colours being used already, but I would probably go black w the closed boxes, so they recede. An added benefit is that if collectibles or frames find there way on top of the boxes, they will have easy focus.

I think a shade preferable to smashed curtains, if that is the choice at hand. Romans often look better w wider trimwork to balance, though; take a look at some bamboo or faux wood options and see what you think in comparison to the visual weight of romans.

Smashed curtains means from the bed being against them on the wall. Wider trimwork means the molding around the window is rather narrow for the weight of many romans. Google roman shades and look at the woodwork on those windows.

I recall Michele begging for you not to turn away. 2 did and I was the only one who let the friendship trump the disagreement. We are all accountable for are own actions. I don't want everyone to think it was just Michele. There are always two sides to a story. With that said, I still am sorry that it all happened! I do not know how that whole thread was missed? ')

Real friendships are not lost over disagreements over pillows. Perhaps it was not a genuine friendship to begin with. No need for kisses and wasted lipstick.

Handymam- you darn right about that. For the record- I didn't pull any plug and this is not the place. I was asked a question and I gave a genuine response.

Why is it not appropriate? It is your thread;) I know,.... I get it!! reading the comments it was looking like Michele was getting the brunt end of the stick.

Gosh, I just don't remember the thread with a pillow issue. It sounds as if it was deleted though. When I have a discussion going, I always get lots of suggestions I don't end up following and often people get annoyed with me, but in the end I end up feeling that I got a lot of helpful advice and the project really pleases me. Michele offers so many really great suggestions and seems to be fine with it when you don't agree with some. I've found the same helpful people whose suggestions I didn't take in one discussion still join in when I start a new discussion and I appreciate that very much. Certainly, I've had to be a bit less sensitive with my Houzz experiences, but the advice is well worth the times when I feel a little (or a lot) beat up. I am always confused about the whole messaging and sharing ideabooks concepts - I'll have to figure that stuff out:)

Angela, the way you said 'I offered my honest opinion about pillows' and 'little did I know it would end friendships' it implied that Michele did something wrong to you or acted petty. It's not fair for that implication to be made. You know that Michele did absolutely nothing wrong that day, all she did do, was try to stop you from acting hastily and ending the relationship shared. And what about all the countless hours she spent helping you with your rooms, supporting you in every way? That should not have been forgotten, I normally would not say anything like this on a public thread, but just can't let this wrong implication-on a public thread- go. It may not be how you meant it, but it sounded like you were making Michele look bad and we all know she doesn't deserve it. I hope you'll see what I mean and correct it.

@bumblebee728-For the record since everyone wants to imply and implicate. At no time did I say that the issue was with Michele. I left the group because I did not feel comfortable laughing after what was said. If I want to say that Michele did something wrong then I would have said that. This was never about Michele and I posted to her thread and told her that and I posted also to your thread and asked that you tell Michele that. So now that all this was said. I am not going to be told that I should have done otherwise.

this was what I posted -"Well Ann I offered my honest opinion about pillows on a thread, little did I know it would lead to a disagreement and end friendships". I do not have her help anymore. Did I say that Michele did something wrong other than that there was a disagreement, I decided to leave so there was a disagreement with me also. Out of everyone that is posting and saying everything-Michele was the one that I felt closest to and bonded with and I had always praised her and appreciate her help. so please do not make it seem like I did not.

I know loyalties run deep with friends, they certainly do for me. Honestly there are only two people in this situation that know the entire story and that is Michele and Angela. Given time I am sure these things will get worked out, good friends have tussles and they work things out. Please show some respect for both Angela and Michele and give them the opportunity to work this out without the entire Houzz community weighing in.

I have to quote my 12 year old Granddaughter here and say "NoneYa". Just in case you are not familiar it means none of your business.

Absolutely right Margaret. I'm so sorry I started this today with my ignorance. Angela, I know how close you were with Michele and I didn't think you were blaming her for anything. I'm very hopeful it will all work out and again, I'm so sorry I opened it up. Truly, I didn't realize any of it and certainly didn't mean any harm, but look what I did - darn!

Final word, OK? Some here on houzz seem to get truly personally invested in their suggestions, and really beleaguer their points. I always figure the OP has the final say on what they choose, and while it might not have been MY choice, it is ultimately not. And it is not directed at mforr in particular, because many seem to "own" their suggestions. Nuff said. I will not mention it again. Sorry, Angela.

Armygirl, Ann, Nancy, etc....On this evening...when we should all feel grateful for the support and encouragement of our fellow Houzzers....I find myself deeply saddened by the direction this "dilemna" has taken. I would like to encourage those who have posted comments about a Houzzer (who is no longer participating in this thread) to please give serious consideration to DELETING their remarks. Or perhaps, Armygirl, it would be better to delete this dilemma in its entirety.

bubbasgma- everytime you post the thread comes back up top so it could have been laid to rest but now it is back on top. I have received help from you so I will leave it at that. I do not have authority to delete a thread. Maybe you could write to Houzz and asked them to.
