Carpet or hardwood in bedrooms/upstairs?

lara12125October 12, 2013
We are building a home and I am trying to decide if we should have carpet in the upstairs bedroom and living room or hardwood and area rugs?
Cost differences?
Practicality?

Thanks in advance for your help and opinions!

I prefer hardwood floors and area rugs. Wood floors are easy to clean and don't trap allergens and dirt like carpet does. Hardwood floors throughout was a must for us when we were house hunting. The only room in our house that has carpet is the family room and I wish it had wood floors too. Maybe someday we will put wood floors in. You can't go wrong with wood floors and they are worth the extra cost. You will never have to replace them, unlike carpet which looks dated and dingy no matter what you choose or how often you clean it after so many years.

I totally agree with everything that alleykat says above. It is so much easier to keep a room clean with hardwood floors and you can always have an area rug adjacent to the bed to step on.

The only problem is that hardwood can be more expensive then carpet. It will be worth the extra expense if you can afford it now.

I go the other way. I appreciate both alleykat and lampert's arguments, but living in a cold clime there is nothing nicer than a soft carpet all the way in the bedroom. I keep shoes out of the room.Of course if you have allergies and animals perhaps not a good idea. But carpet is easy and inexpensive to replace and warm on the tootsies and soft on bare feet!

Maybe I've been brain washed by design shows, or just still recalling the wall to wall green shag of my youth, but I just think hardwood is all that more elegant.

Hardwood flooring throughout would be my personal preference as well.
