Need help with changes to a house we are purchasing.

We are purchasing a home that has an open floor plan from the kitchen thru the breakfast area and into the den. The floors are dark stained concrete and the ceilings in the kitchen are dark stained wood. The ceilings in the breakfast and into the living room are also dark stained wood with exposed beams. The kitchen cabinets are also stained. I would like to lighten the kitchen cabinets and make the wall paint a uniform color but I don't want to turn it into ultra modern since the rest of the house has a rustic feel. There are some built in cabinets in the kitchen I would like to paint and possibly paint the inside of the cabinet a different color. Any ideas?

You can't re-stain the concrete and the ceiling is great. I don't think you can go wrong with white and you can add color with rugs and furnishings. Distress the cabinets for the more rustic feeling.

Love your floors, and agree about distressing. Keeping the new cabinet shade close to the wall colour will allow it to recede some, as well.

What a delightful looking house. I agree that painting the walls much lighter shades throughout will help and then buying furniture in light colors. The furniture can be more contemporary even though the space is traditional .............

Dark ceiling and floors give the illusion of lower ceiling height. I suggest painting the ceilings a light color, leave the beams the way they are and white for the cabinets. The walls in all three areas should have a consistent color through out. Hope this helps!

To lift ceiling height, paint walls and ceiling the same colour it worked really well for me. I used 'strong white' by farrow & ball as I am in UK.
I would say if you intend to paint units look into getting the doors professionally sprayed as gives a more even professional look.
