Houzz is the new way to design your home.

We are closing on a house in a month... due to budget constraints, We can't do a ton to the kitchen immediately. The cabinets are in great shape, as well as the wood countertops. I'm not a huge fan of the "wood on wood on wood on wood" look... The woods never really match that well. To add to this, there's a pergo floor in there too. We have a toddler so I don't think I'm ready to put down tile (she falls a lot), but maybe linoleum or vinyl if I can find something better than what was being made in the 80's. Maybe colorful or contemporary floor, not sure. The house was built in the early 1900's, so I'm sure there was crown originally in the kitchen. I'd like to add that back. Also I hate this "almost white" color of the walls... it's actually a pale pale blue. Toothpaste blue. I'm considering terracotta walls or turquoise walls maybe... any other wall color ideas? I'd love to do a backsplash but hopefully we can switch out the countertops next year and I'd hate it to be a different dimension and therefore have to bust it all out. Ugh. Any other thoughts? What else could freshen up this kitchen? The stainless steel island in the picture goes with the sellers. And is there a lighting suggestion? The current chandelier isn't our style, but I think it's the only overhead light in the room... so we need something that puts out some lumens.
