Stairs with Runner leading to Carpeted Living Area

I am putting new carpeting in my living area (over hard wood floors - I live in Wisconsin and need one area in my house with warm floors!).
I am thinking of putting a runner on the hardwood stairs. I have not seen a single picture of runnered stairs leading to carpeted flooring. Can this look OK? My carpet is a solid - thinking of a vertical striped corresponding runner. Thoughts???

as long as the color of the runner goes with it, striped runner would be fine.

i'm all for area rugs on hardwoods, though, and think they do the job to warm the floor.
but i'm also really warm blooded, so i run hot compared to others.

Yes, it can look fine, but why not use the same carpet for the runner? It will be much more cohesive.
