Those built-ins are really interesting! How about some extra lighting to show them off and to better illuminate the unique items within?
You could try under-cabinet lighting--it's usually marketed for kitchen use, but could fit in well here: http://www.lightsonline.com/under-cabinet-lights/
Or maybe some picture lights: http://www.lightsonline.com/picture-lights/
Or even a small table or accent lamp! http://www.lightsonline.com/table-lamps/ http://www.lightsonline.com/accent-lamps/
Happy hunting!

How about adding cabinets as seen in this inspiration.
It will definitely add storage to keep items hidden away.

Hi there, you have a great space to work with! May we suggest some beautiful baskets for storing smaller items (kids toys, etc). We have a gorgeous selection of baskets, mirrors and decor at http://www.purehome.com Regards, Pure Home Design Team

Hi Amanda,

This is a beautiful space, but it looks unfinished. Particularly odd is the carpeted bottom of the bookcase area.

At minimum, you should have the bottom finished out. One option would be shallow built-in seats with one or two high shelves.

Otherwise, cabinets on the bottom and shelves on top as Ann showed or below.

To make things look better for now, I would paint the back of the shelf area and the inset above the fireplace an accent color.

The arrangement now is not working because there is no cohesiveness. I would remove the family pictures and put them together in a special place.

What do you have a collection of?
Do you have any books?

If you do not want to do construction, how about two large pieces of artwork that complement each other and then use books and baskets on the lower shelves. I would put a large round clock over your fireplace where your "W" is. Good luck

We just moved in about a month ago and this is how it was built. I just don't have anyplace else to display photos and would like to dedicate at least one shelf to that as I have a newborn son. Our plan is to paint the walls an accent color we just haven't decided what color. Could I put the W in in one of the spaces and get a clock? Or mirror?

Would it be expensive to fill in the bottom?

I do not think it would be expensive. It would cost nothing to get an estimate from a local carpenter.

Yes, you can dedicate one shelf to photos.

I like the bowling pins. What else do you have?

For now, you could take a couple of large baskets and place them in the bottom with toys or blankets.

I think the W is fine over fireplace.

What other colors are in your room?
