Need help to design two apartments that are turned into one.

Hi everyone,

I'm an interior design student here in Norway. I am currently working on my last project but I'm stuck for quite a while. I would like to ask for some suggestions on how to make a practical interior design for this two-turned-into-one apartment. The owners are couple in their 50's with two children who also have their own families.

The apartment should have the following room:
1. Living room
2. Kitchen
3. Dining room
4. Main bedroom
5. Guest room

They have big circle of friends, so a big dining room, in addition to kitchen is essential for them.

I'm quite puzzled on how to make the two apartment a one apartment unit, so the residents and/or visitors doesn't need to walk on the main entrance to go to the toilet or other parts of the apartment.

I have attached the floor plan & the section drawing. Sorry, its norwegian, but I translated the important words into english.

I hope you guys will help me. Thank you so much in advance.

So, I think I figured out which room are the bedrooms, but which is the kitchen, the living, and the dining?

And the stairway is public space, is that right?

Does the owner not want a more open floor plan, or does the structure of the building not allow for it?

The section drawing doesn't really explain the current condition.

Thank you so much Brenda.

The kitchen should be in the room with water supply & ventilation, such as ROM 1 or ROM 7. That also challenge me on where the kitchen, dining and living will be. By the way, the living room can be placed in either of the rooms with firewall. But still can't figure out which is the best. :-(

Yes, the stairway is a public space.

The owner didn't say if they want an open floor plan or not, they didn't say neither which room is which room. They are just requesting a lay-out with nice flow. I think the building structure does not allow it to have open floor plan, as they already removed part of a middle support wall ( ROM3 ) and created a door between ROM 1 & ROM 2. But it is possible to widen the doors and build new light walls if necessary.

Buy the way, they want a walk-in closet connected to their bedroom, as they doesn't want to occupy their bedroom with cabinets.

By the way, which room do you think is best to use as bedrooms?

Hi Dytecture,

Thank you.

You are right. The section drawing doesn't give enough information about the apartment itself.

But as I can see it, they showed the height of the open door between the two rooms (ROM 1 & ROM 2), windows etc. Also to show how the cornices installed or maybe looked like. By the way, this apartment was built in 1900's and the owners are fond of modern classic design/arts.
