Thanks for the quick reply:). One more question. Are the joints in the butcher block noticeable? On the ikea website it looks like you can see the finger joints on the edge of the counter.

No. The edge of the counter looked fine - I'd suggest going to take a look in person and seeing what you think.

Good to know. The closest ikea is about 10 hours away so I would have to order it and have it shipped. I've seen it used lots in Houzz pictures but don't know anyone that has actually used it.

I've used their wood countertops for a small kitchen and in the past had a butcher block backing counter (not theirs however). As long as they are oiled appropriately they work very well. Especially for a baking area.

Easy to work with.
Free shipping once or twice a year. I live 10 hours away as well.
