Old mirror needs help

I have this really old mirror that I love. It has a few issues . It has some chips on the farms and such and the mirror part itself has some blemishes. It was my step moms grandmothers and I can't part with it. I'm thinking of hanging it over my sofa . Any tips to give it new life ?

Paint it and rub it down to expose the detail.

I would leave it as is and embrace the "antiquing". Paint the frame a deep charcoal to go with your beautiful gray walls.

I am not sure that over the sofa is the best place. Would need to see more photos of your place.

That sofa-----can you replace it?

Can't replace sofa right now. Thus is the den we also have a large living room we will be buying a sofa for. I figured with the large windows across the room from the sofa would brighten it up. I'm struggling with finding something for this large wall!!!!!! I plan to get slip covers for the recliners and I have made a large green ottoman to go in front of the sofa for some color . Waiting on the legs I ordered to come in. The walls are brown kinda lighter than milk chocolate.

alright this is what i would do, take the mirror to a professional and have it restored back to new.. BUT you have a chance of damaging it on the way.. or the person restoring it could accidentally break it (things happen)... if you do want to take that risk that's your choice, it might actually last longer then it already has if its restored back to 100%... OK besides that i think that's a great place to put the mirror above the couch but make sure you have the proper wall screws or however your going to hang it.. don't want that falling down and hitting you while your on the couch :p hope these ideas helped!

Okay, you need to move furniture.

-move chairs forward so that they are next to drape.
-move couch forward so you can walk behind it

bookcase area will become a separate cozy reading or game area. Do you have any more chairs?

I would not waste $$ on slipcovers. Save that $$ towards new chairs.

Please rearrange and post pics and I will help you tweak.

I'd do a cooper patina finish on the mirror frame to help tie in the new ottoman. Here is a tutorial and pic of a lamp base (same process). http://diykindagirl.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

I saw a large picture frame turned into a coffee table, You can have a table frame and legs built for it and place it on top. It would look gorgeous, in order not to to blemish the mirror further see if you can add a protective film over it and buy some round decorative pieces to place on table. You could also use it Try to re-purpose it without changing it.

Some ideas from Houzz:

I love that old mirror - if you want the gold to show through - use a dark stain/paint and just rub it on and make sure you wipe off the excess before it dries - that will bring out the detail - as for the mirror, unless you are using it for applying make-up I would just leave as is.

Room may appear bigger in pics than it is . If I move furniture in it will block the walkway. I've moved this room around like 4 times since we moved here in March

Is the back of the frame the same color? You could try a small area there to see how it would look.

I am guessing that a dark brown glaze will harmonize better with that gold than black. I put brown glaze on lots of my gold things to give them some patina and to make them look less Hollywoody.

Nice job on mirror!

The furniture you have is too large for the room. Do you need all of it?

Have you tried facing the couch where the chairs are, but moved up?

What is missing is a furniture arrangement that works. Also, what are your colors? Green and brown?

I have tried the couch there but we set in our recliners all the time and the tv is over the fireplace. The furniture is fairly small except for the tables. I was trying to go with a green and don't know what other color to do to brighten things up.

Spray paint a silver, or use a silver metallic glaze. Lowes carries. Hang 6" above sofa. Hang long ways. Add a coffee table in reclaimed wood and add mercury glass pots to it. To tie together. Pillows in your green in prints and solid. Mix it up. Add end table with tall mercury glass base. On end.
