Good Riddance! Kitchen Makeover-Finally!
taclark97
November 4, 2013 in Before & After
Finally! We've been waiting for years to remodel our kitchen and dining area. We also removed the wall between the kitchen and living area which vastly opened up the space and made it much more family-friendly. We removed the existing french door which gave more much-needed kitchen space. We removed the fireplace/chimney and added double french doors. I had to turn the lights off because I was having a hard time getting clear after pictures with the additional natural light in this area. What do you think?

That is quite a transformation. I like that you've added the patio doors too. Nice job!

@mforr, you are right on both counts! I also added a bulletin board to the grand kids playroom and a magnet board in hubby's garage to keep the fridge cleaned off!

Love it....Only thing I would have done differently is the curved wood above the window.

Wow...it doesn't look like the same house. Just curious, the old room with the fireplace - was that a dining room or originally designated as a family room? I don't understand why 2 tables were literally feet apart? By removing the wall (GREAT IDEA!) did you open up to one of those formal living rooms used only for Christmas and special occasions? Beautiful - Congratulations. Based on the wallpaper alone, the re-do was way over due.

@sheilex, thanks! I decided on the layout and features and a local cabinet business took over from there.

@Sharyn, the room with the fireplace was a small den originally. Behind the wall there was originally a formal living room and dining area combo. We combined the den/living room behind that wall and moved the dining furniture to the old den area until we started this project. With no counter space in the original kitchen, I used that counter-height daily for food prep, etc. And yes, it was WAY overdue! We could see the potential for this home when we bought it, but the things we wanted to do all hinged on one another so we waited until we could do it all at once. So glad that time finally got here!

Beautiful! Can I ask how long t hat Island is and do you do most of your "work" there? We are looking at a very similar layout.

@tslaroche, it is 8 ft long. I was afraid it would "swallow" the area, but was assured it would be fine. It is the perfect size for the area! Yes, most everything is done on the island although I use the area between the sink and stove a good bit, too. There is a built-in trash bin in the island which is easily accessible while I am "working." It's on the sink end which makes it convenient for the sink/dishwasher area, too. Good luck with yours!

Thanks so much, we were looking at 8 feet as well and that was my exact worry. Love seeing yours. Beautifully done, thanks for sharing it!

@tslaroche, I am SO glad we didn't go smaller! There is plenty of room around it, so it would've been wasted space if we had!
