Who's job is it? - Taking out the garbage

Emily HurleyNovember 7, 2013
Is there a designated person in your home that is responsible for taking out the garbage every week? How did you come up with that plan and how does it work for you?

The person who did not cook the meal takes out the garbage. In other words, I never take it out :>)

I disdain garbage very much, so it is my husband job.

It's almost never my job, but I'm happy to help out when needed. :)

We both do. Note: He says that it is his "manly duty."

Why don't we design our homes so that no-one minds taking out the trash? Who likes it when it's a walk down to the bottom of the driveway in the rain? It's two jobs where we live - taking out the trash and then getting that great big wheelie bin out of the 'bin lodge' and onto the sidewalk on garbage days. Definitely a function of our homes that could be improved with design and technology - must get the thinking cap on!

We both take trash from house to can and cans to street and back, but husband does it more than I do.

My roommate and I take it out at the same time. We round up all the trash in each room and do one big trip to the dumpster. Apartment living at it's finest. ;)

A marriage is a partnership, Whoever has an empty hand when it is time to take it out; ...okay real life. I take it out unless I forget, then I take more of it out the following week.

Whichever kid or husband enters the kitchen at the magical time! "Oh, so glad you are here because the trash needs to go. Thanks!"

Me and my cat. She loves to walk down the hallway (condo) she goes to the library around the corner from the trash room while I get rid of trash. Then we look for books and stroll back home.

My husband says a married lady should never have to take out trash. And I haven't either...for five entire years. Come to think of it, that's just one of the many many small things he does to say I love you. He's the best.

Yes but who brings the bins back in? Always in a rush to get them out, no-one can be bothered to bring them back in!

@vkilpatrick - lol! Isn't that why we had kids - to take out the garbage and clean the kitchen after supper?

seriously - most of the time it is my sons's chores - but one is already away at university and the second goes next fall! That's the end of my 'house elves'. My husband might actually have to take it out himself starting next year. And I'll have to break down and do the dusting instead of giving that job to the kids!

@kathy. Less kids, therefore less trash and dusting ! Husband should be able to handle all of it !

My son takes the trash can to the street on his way to school, and brings it back to the home after school.

I wish I had a husband....on trash day only. :) Trash pickup is early and I always forget to take out the night before. I've met the trash man a few times in my PJ's.

I do all the chores, including taking out the trash (four different kinds of, actually) plus rolling the bins to the curb and back. I think it's only fair as my husband works hard and earns the money. He is always willing to help, but I'll have to ask, because he's a bit 'chore-blind'. ;-)

Midmodfan... Sounds like our home. My husband job is so all over he will if he's home (if he knows what day it is that is or I ask). Other than that the 10 year and I will usually run it to the street on the way to school that day....

When the hubster and I got married I told him I did not do three things. Take out the trash, do maintenance on the car and do yardwork except for my flower beds. The only thing that has changed in the past 35 years is that I do take out the trash if he is traveling out of town on Mondays.
