Hi Everyone, I bought a new home and there is a kitchen table/island that can only use regular kitchen chairs. I am having trouble finding a look I like with these chunky legs on the island. Any suggestions?

Metal, wood or plastic? Which works best with rest of your furnishings?

A bit more information is needed. Is there another table with chairs in the kitchen? Let's see the rest of the room.

Here's a few ideas. I would pick a chair with simple straight legs.

That is the only kitchen table in the room. That room flows into a great room. I have ordered furniture for the great room mostly in grays with some leather accents, but this seating area is just confusing me.

I would use white directoire chairs, because you need both an open back (to see the island rather than obscure it), and a touch of formality:

I like the idea of metal chairs to offset everything else. (Super gorgeous btw!)

The white chairs might look something like this in your kitchen:

Take a look at the dining room chairs from Bryght www.bryght.com

Here are a few of my favorites that I think would work well with your table/island

1. Amanda dining chair
2. Olivia dining chair
3. Zola dining chair

There is a great room behind....A couch will be behind. The room is mostly grays and boot leather colors. So neutral.

Could replace legs on island with some that are more streamlined ie. less chunky and "carved"

How about painting the base a dark color....something you can pull in from the surrounding area...and bringing in some fun chairs that tie the dark color and your white cabinets together?

I like the second one, because it would be really easy to reupholster the seats whenever you wanted a change, and the front legs echo the legs of the table, yet the back legs have more of a streamlined look facing the living area.

You have a lovely large room and it's a shame that when seated at the table you can't take advantage of the fourth side and the ends seem restricting. And instead of looking at a wonderful fireplace, the view is of the kitchen and back of the island. Why not separate the table from the island and get a free standing table and a wider selection of chairs?

Thank you everyone. Such beautiful ideas. I have ordered the furniture for the rest of the room. It will arrive in the next month or so. I think I will wait to see how that all looks and then chose the chairs for the seating area. I will post finished pics! Thank you!

Good idea to wait until the other furniture comes in. Consider a bench there. You can upholster it to coordinate with other textiles in the great room. I think chairs on island tables can look a bit cluttery. Post more pics as you get your furniture in! Great house.

benches aren't very comfortable for one's back unless they're up against the wall!

If you don't like the legs you could ask the builder to come back and replace them with something you prefer, those won't be lost, the builder can use them in another house.
