Yes they are. They are set directly over the exterior walls of the house, with a structural support that penetrates the roof. The roof is then flashed to prevent water leakage. Depending upon the size of the pergola, a structural engineer should be consulted. Detailing of the penetration is critical to prevent rain leakage into the house wall.
