What should I put in this empty space?

I have two empty spaces on both sides of my fireplace. One side has the tv cables and dvr box. I was thinking about finding some kind of media storage cabinet or something that would good on both sides. Help please

A media cabinet with the TV on top of it is your best bet.

Always a bad idea to mount above fireplace. Put some artwork up there & move the tv to a more natural viewing area...when in a seated position, the tv should be nearly eye level, and never so close to another "device" giving off a distracting light, such as a fireplace.

As an audio visual design engineer, it is my area of expertise.

you could do a set of base cabinets with shelving above.
it would keep the modern look, but not so modern as to seem out of place.

I agree with Bungalowmo - very bad idea to mount a tv above a fireplace: your eyes will not know what to look at first, plus, when seated on a sofa, looking up that high isn't good for your neck. I would bring in a carpenter and make 2 huge floor-to-ceiling cabinets left and right from the fireplace, so that whole wall looks as one. Store the TV and everything with it in one part, and use the rest as storage space - you'll thank me for that! (close the void in the left wall, or add some shelving facing the other room)
I like the chairs, but I would add a loungy, lofty sofa to hang in when watching TV.

Thanks for the feedback! The tv isn't going anywhere. There will be a sectional sofa at the vantage point of first picture so it will be natural viewing the tv.

I'm really looking to buy pieces for that space. I was thinking floating shelves and base cabinets. Thanks!

I see that the mantel is somewhat traditional while the chairs and in the photo are more modern. If you can replace the mantel to something more modern, then the cabinets/shelves could be modular (similar to some of IKEA's).

Would this work on its side? It would fit into the space

@jjatlgray: have a TV over my fireplace and it works fine for us. Really think it has more to do with whether you face TV or not ( our does ). Also, I think it depends on viewing distance. Can certainly see where viewing close up could cause neck problem.

For the open spaces beside fireplaces, I like chests with shelves/ art work/lamps. Many options. Good luck.

it looks like a 2x4 would be too skinny to fill up the space.
a 4x4 or a 4x5 might do you better. but i like the idea of the height they would give. it would balance the tv.

Thanks for the feedback guys!!!

My tv is on a tilt mount, I highly recommend. No neck problems here ha

Does this chest look too traditional? I plan on adding gold and silver accent pieces inside of it to go with the rest of my decor along with the dvr box and my DVDs. Would that work?

We had a similar situation - we got someone to custom build two good quality timber bookcases/display units each side - it was an old house so worked really well

My ideal would be to try to get as close as you can to the look of a built in. Are you limiting yourself to Ikea (not a bad thing, just wondering)? If so, you may want to look at the billy bookcases - you can add doors to the bottom.

Get two matching cabinets that will fill whole wall. Put your components in one put tall 4 ft wide mirrors over each chest hang vertically 6-7" above top of cabinet.add tall big lamps to each side place on side. I would get a 7 ft sofa solid dark gray. Float looking at TV. Keep chairs where they are remove table between place side by side put a Two chairs opposite them. Use a big 36" coffee table dark wood. Add panels to ends of windows, very full extend rod pass window to fill wall more go solid in a gold like in chairs. You could get same chairs as you have or go a solid cream. Pillows use wall color plus cream, and a accent color, teal would work.

I meant to say mirror is 4 ft tall and wide maybe 36" cab dark or a Asian look would be nice. With the gold Asian hardware. Google look.

Travisinteriors- I love that idea of two mirrors hanging over the chest! I have no idea what type of mirror. Do you have any photos of the look?

If you get something lower, I like travis's idea of hanging mirrors above.
Just for general ideas and inspiration, if you search the ideabooks for "styling around TV" there are a few articles

An option would be to use low cabinets with lamps and art above. Less cluttered than with shelves.

I'm with LB Interiors idea with art above two beautiful chests. If storage is an issue get creative with shelving/cabinets in those spaces. The furniture placement in the photo is beautiful and will work well in the center and right of your room. Happy Decorating!

I like the idea of bungalowmo, with the A/V cabinet with glass & wood framed doors to the left of the f/p. I would wall mount the TV, on an arm, for turning. I would build a combo of shelves above a base cabt. with drawers over doors on the other side. Use lighter wood, such as ash or maple. Happy Houzzing.

Now should I get 2 more armless chairs that are the same from picture for the other side?? Or should I get two solid gray chairs with arms to match sofa for other side??

This is difficult
