Front Yard Landscaping, Help!

We have two trees in our front yard that block any sun these plants could get.

We are interested in "xeriscape" because it is less maintenance.

We are open to any suggestions because this is NOT the look we are going for :) we just want something with more color that can take Texas heat and not getting a lot of sun!

I suggest that you log into the Lady Bird Johnson web site to search for native that meet your requirements. http://www.wildflower.org/

LCRA has a nice plant guide as well http://www.austintexas.gov/sites/default/files/files/Watershed/growgreen/plantguide.pdf

I've got Central Texas shade too - I have Sago palms & love them. Also Lantana & Mexican Heather has been very hardy (it does freeze though)

On the taller sides, I'd put maybe a Pyracantha or Carolina Jessamine for some color and interest.

Have also good success with Plumbago & Rosemary. Loving ponyfoot creeper, though I don't have any - yet!

Thank you for the website! I looked up your suggestions and they are definitely what we are looking for!

Is there a "formula" to follow when deciding where to put everything?

Thanks again!

I would start by making the flower bed more interesting. Right now it is a little box. I suggest you expand it out and create some curves and mounds. Then plant a small tree on the mound, one that will stay small scale.

Is there an outlet near? I small fountain is always good in spots that are difficult for plants.

Hoses are great for laying out different shapes, areas. Then when you are happy, use spray paint to mark out your design. Find something to define the edge (there are a lot of options from bendable rolls on up).

Then have some good soil delivered (mounds add dimension and show off plantings). Sometimes all you need are a few nice plants (as in photo above with the Purple Fountain Grass). Remember, doing just a few different plants, and repeating those, will have a lot more impact than heading to the garden center and buying one of those, a couple of these...

Then top off with good mulch!

Try Australian hardy natives. Not from the tropical north, but outback. Dianellas enjoy shade, and have a blue flower.
