Old House - New Hardwood and Old Hardwood Floors

We just purchased a 1930s Cape Cod. The majority of the house has Douglas Fir hardood 3 1/4 inch flooring. The Family Room has an addition and the previous owners put down carpet. I really dislike carpet but realize that matching the Fir floors will be significantly more expensive than just buying a different type of hardwood. We were thinking Hickory. So here are our options:

Hickory - we can buy 2 1/4 width now or order 3 inch width and wait 3 weeks - if we aren't matching the type of wood do we still want to try and match the width?...or...

Just replace the carpet?

The old hardwoods wouldn't touch the new hardwood. The kitchen on one side is tile and we would tile the hallway so there would be not direct transition between the wood flooring.
