Found Parquet floors under carpet
esmelcerNovember 29, 2013
We found old parquet underneath carpeting in a study when preparing to put in hardwood. Should I take out the parquet and put in the new hardwood to match nearby rooms as intended or leave the parquet and have it refinished? Is this style of 1 inch parquet strips coming back? At some time I was going to replace the slate foyer, but didn't intend to do it now. If I leave parquet it means seeing three types of flooring when you enter the front door. Slate foyer, parquet in study to the right, and dark hardwood in dining room to the left and family room straight ahead beyond foyer. Thoughts???

Have it refinished and stained to match the new hardwood.

I agree to keep. I am always excited to find a gem hidden under carpet :). If you tire if it you can always change later

It looks beautiful. I'd keep it. How old is your house?

Our house is a 40 year old ranch. The past owner took out many walls some years ago to open it up which is wonderful, but it's time again to do some remodeling. Thanks for your response.

Your parquet is beautiful and I agree you should stain it to match your hardwood. Good choice on the slate. 40 years and it still looks great.

I love the floor. I think it's actually a herringbone pattern rather than parquet

If hardwood going to be laid over the top of current floors, you may have a significant lip at the seam. If all can be level with appropriate threshold, keep it.

I would leave it and have it re-finished.

I am not a fan of the parquet look, but like the herringbone pattern that you have here! I would stain it too match as many other people have suggested.

That is a beautiful floor! You'd probably spend upwards of $40/sq,ft, to get it today! Matching the stain to the hardwood will make it subtly blend.
