Modernize nightstand help

How can I make this nightstand look more like a contemporary piece of furniture? I'm open to colors, mirrors, handles... Any idea because I'd like to use it in my bedroom but it has a completely different look. Room has white, cream, tan and modern.

Silver leaf is probably too labor intensive and expensive, but done right would look awesome.

Is there a faux silver leaf method/product on the market these days?

This is a good piece to learn on, because it's sturdy and not veneered. You can sand off a few mistakes without going through the wood.

It's the rustic knotty pine wood and rusty hinges that are the problem.

Change the hardware for something more modern, perhaps longer vertical handles, or a glittery or whimsical knob.

Remove the hardware, fill and seal the knotholes and sand it smooth, then paint it a color or colors that look good with the rest of your stuff. Use good medium gloss paint meant for cabinets.

silverleaf is GORGEOUS, but best done on something that doesn't get a lot of action. i once did a side table and within a couple of years of use it was very worn. which, incidentally actually looked great...it was an improvement and worked well ... but still.

There is wallpaper, but afraid that will look too much like contact paper.

Take a look at the inside of the door...usually the inside is a flat panel. You could flip the doors and use the inside as the showing panel.

I agree that new hardware will go a long way.

With regards to paint, I have regretted having everything look too matchy matchy before. If your room is white/beige already, I'd avoid painting it white/beige to match. Is there an accent color you have in the room or could see yourself implementing? I just think this is an opportunity for a little pop of color (even if it's a relatively neutral accent color). I think it's a beautiful piece...good luck with whatever you do!
