Neutral paint color for large area of home

I am wondering what paint color would work for my next painting project (a huge one!!!). I have a large 2-story foyer with stairs going to second floor and hallway, large 2-story great room and hallway that all flow together. I was thinking of painting all those rooms the same (neutral?) color and then using more bold but earthy colors in the dining room, kitchen, powder bath and master. Any comments or ideas? Colors? Thanks!

I love Benjamin Moore Niveous paired with cloud white. This is great in a transitional space. It's neutral and will go will everything. It's a Candice Olson designer favorite. http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-ca/paint-color/niveous#tempZoom

I use C2 - Chai, there popular neutral. It's darker than the BM Niveus. I use BM - Richmond Bisque in a bathroom with no windows, that goes great with the installed Travertine.

Thank you both so much for the paint color suggestions. I will get samples and see how they look.
