Great planters! But what's on the ground? Gravel?

I just want to know what covers the ground, it looks like sand or gravel. Wouldn't it hurt to kneel down on gravel while gardening? Thank you for your time, I appreciate any reply.

A garden would look so nice in my back yard. This year my husband and I said we would start one. The garden here looks similar to what we are wanting to do. It is a big project so we better get started soon. http://www.shedmaster.net
