flooring over and around access panels/ trap doors for basment drain

Joy RiffleDecember 26, 2013

We are refinishing our basement and have installed a subfloor. The concrete floor was covered with a dimpled waterproof membrane with plywood on top. In two areas, we needed to maintain access to the basement floor drain (via a 10"x10" access panel in the subfloor) and to the backflow prevention/ sewer drain cleanout valve (via a 12"x16" access panel in the subfloor). The floor drain access is right in the middle of a major traffic area so cannot be covered by furniture. The access to the backflow valve is somewhat easier to hide as it is against the basement wall. Regardless, I'm wondering what material we should use to finish the floor to maintain access but best camouflage the access covers. I'd really like to use carpet but how would we carpet the access panels? Hard wood is out of the question so how would we do that with laminate or vinyl?

How about carpet tiles? When necessary, you need only to lift up the square over the access panel.

Hi Joy, did you ever solve this? I have the same problem. I'd like some sort of plywood or something to fill the space above the back flow valve and then put a (bound) piece of the same carpet on top of it so that it's level with the rest of the carpet.
