Should I cut an area rug due to an obstruction?

My living room fireplace has a platform which prevents me from getting an area rug that would be appropriate for that room. Should I just cut the area of the platform and get the correct size? I would bind off the area.

No, If the area rug has pattern to it , it will look odd. Either have a custom one measured and bound from a carpeting store, or use a smaller rug that does not come to the fireplace area at all
