Challenging Bathroom - Please Help!

borski1965January 1, 2014
I live in an elevated bungalow. Our bathroom has an unusual shape in that it juts in because of the front entry closet. The previous owners tiled that surface but we're not happy with the look. It also has a soaker tub which we don't really need since we have a hot tub that we use on a regular basis. We also don't like the mirror/medicine cabinet or lighting.

We would love suggestions for changing things up, please.

Who uses the bathroom? Is there a shower?

There is a shower which the whole family uses on a regular basis. I'm attaching another photo.

Thanks for the photos. What area are you in? That's one of the least cluttered family bathrooms I've ever seen.

Have you settled on a budget- will it be paint and a new medicine cabinet or more extensive?

Thanks. I try. I live outside of Toronto. Willing to do anything at this point. Definitely paint. Not a peach colour person. Thinking some light smokey blue with dark brown accessories but very much open to ideas. The elevated tiled area major eyesore.

Was really hoping my first experience with houzz would be positive but so far a I am not getting much feedback with my design dilemma. Isn't there anyone who can help with this awkward space.

Some dilemmas do not get the attention. Not sure why. I'm not a designer but was wondering if you could maybe do a full built in cabinet over the entire tile ledge. Then maybe you wouldn't need the full floor cabinet next to toilet? Or you could do colorful baskets for each member of your family to keep their personal items in? Are you looking for permanent solution? Are you thinking about a full remodel? Or just looking for ideas to make it work better?

Hi borski1965, are you planning to change fixtures at all in this bathroom, or are you looking for advice on surface treatments only? If so, I think your smokey blue/dark brown idea is excellent.

You might want to remove the white tile from the top of the bump-out, and build in storage that makes use of the space above the surface. In this way, it could become a useful feature. The first 10" could form shelving facing the vanity, and the rest could be a combination of shelves and enclosed cabinetry facing the tub.

By doing this, you could probably add enough storage to replace the tall freestanding cabinet in your bathroom, opening up the space.

Tear out the soaker tub and put in a double vanity. Tear out the odd closet, medicine cabinet. Get new lighting. The shower the family uses, put in new frameless shower enclosure;)
