Brushed absolute black vs soapstone
Heidi Delloso
January 2, 2014
We are moving and redoing an old kitchen and I am trying to decide between brushed absolute granite or soapstone. I have realized I do not like shiny granite due to streaking. I think I've narrowed it down between soapstone or brushed absolute granite. I need reviews!!

Love my soapstone, but I also don't mind an occasional scratch or ding.

I'm a fan of soapstone, personally. It has such lovely veining and a really nice feel for an older home. I've attached a photo of a kitchen I designed that used Soapstone. Just remember to keep it oiled if you want that deep, rich look.
Best of luck with your remodel!

I love soapstone. At a Restaurant on the beach in Southern California, they have a chisled edge soapstone bar with a lot of stainless and Wood elements. It was really cool.

Did you mineral oil the soapstone? It looks like you did. That gives it a darker, shinier finish.

Yes, I oiled it with mineral oil right before taking photos. The sheen tends to disappear after a while, but the nice, rich color will remain.

Does it streak? I love grayish look of the unmineralized soapstone but am afraid the scratches and upkeep will bother me.

Oiling it shouldn't cause streaking, unless you apply a ton. You'll definitely notice scratches, etc- more on an "untreated" piece, but over time the countertop will patina.
