need help with my living room/ dining room

liselottereyesJanuary 9, 2014
A few months ago my husband and I bought this town house in westchester, NY. We recently remodeled the kitchen but haven't don't Much with the living room, so it's looks hideous for an house that has so much potential. For starters we have a couch, a small bar, a dining table and tv console. we need some kind of chair/love seat to match. We also need suggestions for window treatment, wall and floor decor. I wanted to buy some large vases but I have no idea on how to choose the right size and color. Any ideas for chairs we should get?? help would be greatly appreciated! I'm looking for a rustic/modern look.

The throw pillows on the couch are so pretty! Also love that nifty TV console's shape.

I assume your living room has recessed can lighting in the ceiling. However, have you thought about adding more lighting? For example: a task lighting fixture (a floor lamp or some table lamps) or some wall sconces? Maybe something finished in bronze or a burnished/antique/patina brass to go with the rest of the decor?

Hi, I think a large mirror would be nice on the wall next to the dining room table, it would reflect that beautiful chandelier.

I think to go with your rustic modern look in the living room you need to bring in wood, but not too heavy, and something simple that doesn't fight with the geometric rug. something like this....

I think for window treatments, ditching the draperies would be the way to go...if you want the space to be modern and rustic, try roman shades in a soft oatmeal color or pull a deeper brown/grey from the area rug. This will provide clean lines AND privacy!

A mirror always helps to open up a smaller space too so above the sofa/sectional would be the perfect space for that and contemporary, bright colored canvases side by side (3 square) behind the dining table would pull that room together.

To create a rustic look, try deep, woodsy shades of browns, greens and oranges. This contemporary rug offers earthy colors and is a nice contrast with your sofa. Plus, the orange shades in the rug tie in nicely with your dining chairs. The mirror is made out of real birch branches (rustic, but modern) and is large (38x38) so it would fill the wall above the sofa. Your current throw pillows are nice, but in order to create a more rustic look, you might have to go with darker colors for the pillows.

For the dining room -- a large floor vase (see photo for size) with reeds or branches placed in the corner by the window would be rustic and modern, along with a dynamic art canvas of a nature scene on the bare wall -- one that's as large as the table and has the color of the dining chairs. Was also thinking of a glass bowl as a centerpiece on the dining room table -- one that compliments the chandelier (the oblong vase is the same geometric shape) and the green color would be striking in the company of the chandelier. You could put fresh fruit in the bowl -- very modern, earthy and rustic!

I like everything Christi for ThosBaker posted. I think you need to be careful about getting too matchy matchy here. Your sofa, rug, and pillow are getting very close.

Those dark curtains really close off the light. Shades in a natural color would be perfect for your windows.

And before you put a mirror anywhere in the space, take a look at what it will reflect. Of course, art is always my first choice. Inherently more interesting, IMO.

Use artwork to bring in another color and add some spark to the space.

Art for sure! Change the drapes to woven shades. Add one or two big pillows to the sofa. These don't need to be s small as the ones you have now. Use tiny prints for the fabrics. Try the rug angled. Use light colored objects on the coffee table. Add an overscaled lamp.

You might also want to consider built ins in the living or dining room to define the space. Here are some photos of a modular system where you can add shelves, drawers, hook up a tv if needed:
