I need help designing my living room (furniture and layouts please)

jenifferlouJanuary 9, 2014
I need help designing my living room. Was thinking of adding two sofas (one in front-of the window and the other on opposite wall) and perhaps a console table near dining room under the paintings. Anyone with a good design plan??

First pic is a view from my breakfast area
Second pic is a view from dining looking into the living space
Third picture is from a view upon entering the home

It's a bit hard to see the entire space. But, I think the living room furniture should be where the dining table is. I'd even leave the chandelier there for the living space. Then, the dining space opposite. But, what is in the next room? It's an interesting floor plan that can be quite interesting.

Thanks for your comment.
The room right next to it is a large breakfast area. I think the idea of switching tables would be ideal if it wasn't next to the breakfast area.. It would be then weird to have a dining table next to another table. It's tricky because of the fireplace location I think...

Do you have another living space with your tv? I'd like to make it a "purpose" space. How about two matching loveseats facing each other? But, instead of a coffee table to block the flow, a small ottoman/table for each loveseat opposite each other? That way, you'll have a conversation area and place to plop a glass, but not block the thoroughfare? Sort of like this, but two loveseats, and one ottoman for each sofa. Or, instead of the ottomans, garden stools. Or, something like the 2nd photo.

I'd lower those two pieces of art and put a credenza under them to keep from adding a more leggy table. You have lots of vertical lines already with the stove surround. How about floating a pair of pretty banquettes facing each other over an oval coffee table, anchored on a nice rug? Would add a tall piece of casegoods (book shelf or secretary) on the wall to break the linearity.

Hi darzy
Yes I do have a family room with a tv on the other side of the house.
I think your idea is very good. I've been debating that for a while now...
Do you think I should add a console table under those wall paintings? Or perhaps a larger sophisticated lounger on an angle? Or nothing?

Thanks decoenthusiaste
I agree too many verticle lines and now that you mentioned a console table would add too many table legs.
Great advice.
There's so much potential in this room if only the right pieces are purchased. :-)

I think a piece of furniture in the dining area would be too crowded but agree you need something. How about a floating shelf below the art? Just wide enough to put hors de ourves, wine bottles, glasses, etc. Check out this photo...like this, but just long enough to go past the art an inch or so.

This may be a weird idea...but it would be very cool to have the shelf a "natural" wood piece to relate to the "rustic" stove fireplace. This is in a bathroom, but imagine a piece of natural, beautiful floating wood below your art.

check out the link above for an idea on the layout of the room. I'm not sure if the dining room is something that has to stay or can be moved? But two sofas would work if it was laid out symmetrically.

I do think you need balance that wall across from the stove. You may also want a serving surface and storage. There is great light in this room, and a pop of color would really brighten up the wood.

I agree. The living space is lacking something visually elegant that's something other than seating.
Thank you.

Stuntchick ... I agree it would be a much easier approach to remove it but my husband and I actually enjoy using it so I'll have to work around it.
