Does water not flow down onto the outside wall of the home? How do you keep that from happening with this type of ceiling?

Think of it like a huge covered porch.. there would certainly be eavestroughing.. maybe even an aluminum roof!

I'm planning on ripping out the existing ceilings to expose the rafters. What are the non-negotiables for exposing rafters. This house is over 30 years old.
