I want to place a tv over the fireplace, replace stone with new stone
January 9, 2014 in Design Dilemma
I want to replace the cabinet on left with a wetbar and the one on right with something that has more character - style is traditional, cowboy, ralph lauren, european!!! or something like that

I leave your pretty traditional cabinets alone and do NOT put the tv above the fireplace. How about updated stacked stone that complements your cabinets and give you an updated style? Like this stone,,,

I wouldn't do major changes like that. Why not just add a heavy reclaimed wood mantel, maybe change the hardware on the cabinets to something black, maybe even have a black glaze added to the cabinets to cowboy them up a bit.

Add a nice custom mantle, and change up the stain on the woodwork -- go darker to recess the units and add some in cabinet lighting.

Well, cowboy and European are traditional, but very different-so I guess you are saying that you are open to different styles, but prefer traditional ones. I agree that I wouldn't go and start tearing out eveything, as that is some very lovely-and probably expensive-cabinetry you have there. How about just leaving the tv where it is, and removing the doors off of the other side and making part of it into a wet bar, and the rest just open shelving for storage or decorating. I also agree on the other cosmetic changes others have mentioned, like changing the finish on the cabinets.

Maybe something like this is what she has in mind for "European"?

I think the cabinetry you have is very traditional. If you feel it's dated I would have it professionally painted and update the hardware it's actually very beautiful woodwork. If anything I would replace the stone on the fireplace and add a mantle

No TV over the fire. You can see why by the smoke marks.

Leave cabinets, change stone. Add a mantle.
Add your favorite accessories and add color and items in other accessories to create your design style.

I would use what you have already . Repaint the room and the cabinets leave the TV in the TV cabinet . I think the colors are not the best for the existing stone.
