Framing this huge African canvas

We have this original West African canvas which is enormous and has raw edges. Our carpenter/handyman offered to help create some type of frame or border for it. We just want something simple. Any suggestions?

I like it frameless. It's fantastic!

My otherhalf has built many shadowbox frames... which act like a boxed rim for the canvas, that floats away from the sides just a bit. This allows a shadow to obscure the edges of the canvas, and provides depth when viewed from the side angles. The canvas frame is attached from the back of course. Build a frame box slightly bigger than the piece and decide how much shadow you want in between the piece and the frame, and then decide how far out you want it to be from the wall. Is the color on the canvas black or really dark brown? You could stain the frame or paint it, but I'd try to match or compliment the darker color. It is gorgeous, btw, and of course, post a pic of the finished art on your wall!

I found a very helpful blogpost of how to do this, and the finished result/effect. Very similar to what we have done. Hope this explains it better than I can.
