Thematically, is brick prevalent throughout your home, both inside and out? I'm reluctant to suggest that changes make sense, short of understanding this. Happy Houzzing.

It's not ugly. I'm not a fan of the wood in the little alcove above it though.

I would paint the brick and have the mantel painted a different accent color.

Would change the mantel, the design is hard on the eyes. Paint the alcove the color of the beam above fireplace. Also would update the black on the fire screen, perhaps, paint it black, using paint suitable for fireplaces.

Don't paint the brick! Can you post more pictures of the area around the fireplace? Does this room open up into any other rooms?

I'm not seeing wood over the existing mantle as much of an improvement. The panelled insert seems a better place for change - painting the area black would look more purposeful. If that seems too intense for the room try a colour close to the overhead beam.

Are those the natural colors of the mantle brick or is that soot?

Simply because the mantle brick looks darker, i.e. like it has soot on it, I would cover it. I wouldn't use the same wood as in the insert. That might be too much of a good thing. What stone is the hearth made of?

Maybe cover the mantel with a similar wood that is in the area above the fireplace. Paint the gold on the fireplace a matte black.

What would you think about encasing the mantle in the same material as the stained beam and staining the mantle the same color? My next question is, is the brick on the underside of the mantle cut out to fit over the fireplace surround or does it sit on top of the surround? I think a new wood mantle could be made to fit over the brick or the surround with no problem. This may sound silly, but make a cardboard or 3/8" plywood mock up of a wood mantle to see what it would look like covered and to see what length would look best. You might want it longer. If you have any of the stain that was used on the beam left, you could stain the mock up too to get a more realistic idea of what encasing the brick would look like. :) The reason I was asking about the hearth stone material was because I was wondering what the mantle would look like covered in tiles made of that stone. I think the stained wood would look nicer :)

-- Without seeing more of the space, you could paint the paneling above the mantle black to match the fireplace surround. This would make the fireplace look like it is connected to the chimney instead of the ceiling. Also, a nice backdrop of artwork hung in that space. The brick is in nice condition and should not be painted. .

I do not understand what is going on on either side of the fireplace - one white wall on the right and the wall on the left is something else I cannot make out. Would you explain the difference please?

Love the mantle, but not the big black monolith.

As usual, I guess I'm the only one who thinks the brick is very attractive.

Cover the mantle in cold rolled steel and dry wall over the wood above it.
