You might want to consider painting the wood trim part of the shelf the wall color and I would leave it empty.

Anything up there will collect dust, and it's hard to get there. I would find a beautiful platter, and sit it on a platter stand. The platter would sit vertically, and collect less dust than the plant that's up there now.

I would paint it out like other people have suggested, and maybe look into putting a small light up there. Not a table lamp, more like something like an undercabinet kitchen light to just add some light to the room without being visible.

How about something simple like this candleholder? http://www.cjshearthandhome.com/living-room/#/?_=1&page=2

Or maybe put something up there that will be taller to cover more space. http://www.cjshearthandhome.com/sterling-iron-coat-rack-w-bowen-bronze/

HI -- I think it would look too odd to put anything up there . Remove the molding and have that area the same color as the walls and just ignore . Builders never know what to do with these leftover spaces so they put leftover molding on it and make it ugly . If that little space is a dusting problem /annoyance for you then have the corner filled in .

Do not draw attention to it. Paint it and forget it is there.

"Builders never know what to do with these leftover spaces so they put leftover molding on it and make it ugly."

This is so true. They rarely do it on purpose. During the punch-list walk through, someone points out this weird corner, likely a framing mistake or perhaps fundamental design flaw, and leaves it to the 27 year old on-site carpenter to "fix it". Then, you get this.

(With sincere apologies to all the adorable 27 year old carpenters out there who are just following instructions!)

I agree that just painting and ignoring it would be a good solution but also an antique clock would be kind of fun there.

Leave it empty and let the architecture speak for itself.

I would paint it too. Or, if you have a cat it could be a cat perch. You'd need to move the table below it and stagger other shelves so the cat could get up there. Just a suggestion...
