Question for School

The hypothesis is: client won't select entire slab of granite--too busy; now the counters are installed and he says it's not what he chose and hates them (he only looked at the 12x12 shop sample)...even though I discouraged this several times. What do I do now?

In my opinion, it actually becomes the client's problem at this point...didn't listen or work with you. Would also reevaluate how you work with / communicate with / encourage / cajole your client.

Professionals in the field use the same vendors over and over again. The vendors like to keep their designers/architects happy. Try to work a good deal for your difficult client. Speak to the client. Try to find out what stone species he would prefer. Go back to the granite vendor. Speak to them and see if they could sell him what he likes at cost (or close). Going the extra mile with your clients will help you in the long run.

Your client was given a small sample, and he based his decision on that. You can blame him for not going to look at the slabs of granite for himself, but he assumed that the sample was representative of the whole slab. You shoud have given him 3 or 4 samples saying that there is a lot of variation in it, and you want him to be able to see it before it's installed.

My recent visit to Lumber Liquidators will illustrate my point. I loved one of the floors and asked for a sample. The salesgirl gave me at least 2 if not 3 samples of it saying she wanted me to be able to see how much color variation is in that type of flooring.

If designer should have signed off all the materials chosen before proceeding.
