Living room that's needing some pizazz!
Reagan FraserJanuary 20, 2014
We are new home owners who are finally getting settled. Our style is pretty traditional with some modern elements. We have hired a company to come paint the trim white, including the mantle. Any paint color or decor suggestions before he starts in 2 weeks? Thanks in advance!

You've done a nice job already. Painting your trim white will give your space an immediate lift. My only suggestions: lower the clock over the mantel or, better yet, work it into the arrangement, and lower the mirror so it's 8" or so above the back of the sofa. Even better would be a large piece of art.

There are several good ideabooks on houzz about styling mantels. You might take a look. A little rearrangement of the pieces you've got would turn out smashing!

Oh, I'd raise the curtains too. Probably hang them from as high as I could get them given the vaulted ceiling.

Thank you @groveraxel! That was very nice and encouraging! Im always keeping an eye out for a nice piece of artwork that is authentic but doesn't cost a fortune!
Do you have any wall color suggestions

I've raised the drapes, simplified the mantel a bit and arranged it asymmetrically for more interest and to better balance the wall. When you put your pictures and objects all the way to the ends, it tends to make the fireplace look squat, and the low curtains don't help either. The whole wall looks taller this way.

Wall color? I thought you were just painting the trim.

I am not the color guru--there are other houzzers much better than I with color--but I would look to get rid of the pink undertone on the walls. I'd be looking at a greige. Chances are someone will come along and give you actual color names.

Good luck.

Your current wall color isn't bad. I'd probably stay pretty close to it with a neutral on the warm side, perhaps a bit less saturated than what you have now. I played a bit with your wall and found any color on the cool side makes your fireplace look pink.

Here's a greige, a lighter greige, and a camel-ly kind of color.

What are your thoughts on blue? Benjamin Moore' Pleasant Valley Blue walks that perfect line between neutral and pop of color. Would look good with existing carpet. Best of luck!

So here we are just a few months later! Thought I'd give y'all an update!!! We are very happy. We will hang the clock just 6" or so from the mantle tomorrow. I'm also keeping an eye out for an area rug and large wall art for over the couch. Nevertheless I finally feel inspired and have a direction
Thanks everyone!

Gorgeous! Love the yellow and teal. And thanks for the update. It's always gratifying to see houzzers end up with successful makeovers. You done good!
