Need some ideas on how to arrange my House (living room & Attic)

January 23, 2014 in Design Dilemma
I've just bought a house and am looking for some ideas/tips on how to play around with the design, colors & furniture. Living room is on the first floor so there's a lot of light coming in.
There's also a small attic accessible via a ladder (which I actually seek to replace) and I'm still not sure what to do with the Attic itself. Don't plan to use it as a bedroom.

Any tips are welcome!

The rail less stairs and raised area look to be hazardous. Consider installing a pony wall for safety sake. You might install proper stairs and use the attic as an office/guestroom, media room or simply storage.

Those steps need some type of rail for safety. I would not put a pony wall, it would crowd the area.

Pony wall doesn't have to block or crowd anything.

Spiral staircase up to the attic? It would make a great office space.

I like decoenthusiast's example of the glass railing. Keeps it light and makes it safe. The brick wall looks good. Hope you're not planning to change that. I'd be tempted to change the warm brown colour to white or at least a lighter, somewhat cooler colour. But it depends on your taste.

I like both the ideas and consider putting them in place. Additional question is what kind of furniture I could use to spice up the place? I don't want to make it too boring with using too much of the same wood color.

So many options. But here are a couple of ideas:
This is an interesting dining table. If you follow the link under the picture it will show you the pattern on the top.
Fancicle Table
Or something sleek lined like this:

Wood Leg Dining Chair White
Arne Jacobsen Style Series 7 Side Chair
Pique Oval Pendant
Shanghai Large Oval Pendant

Wonderful house! How many people have an extra room? Find something exciting to do with the attic: a studio, a guest room, an office, and storage until you really need it.
I agree with those above, you need a railing for safety. I'd hate to have an insurance claim from a fall from the stairs. I'm rather surprised some inspector didn't require one.

At the moment just me and now and then the Gilfriend. Master bedroom, bathroom, storage/officeroom are on ground level. Cellar below. Thanks for the tip.

Where does that opening land in the attic - seems it isn't under the eaves so using a stair you wouldn't arrive to hit your head on something.

Right in front of where the heater is stored, so I'll need to make sure I'm still able to open that cupboard.

Cool stairs in first pic, spiral stairs or something industrial looking to attic. You could incorporate stairs with bookcases on that wall. Metal railing or cable railing for staircase & ledge. Love the bright green paint with the brick wall. Furnishings should be industrial, comfortable, manly like metal, wood & leather. This is such a cool space!
