Help me choose a countertop!!! Carrara?

rbmslzhFebruary 2, 2014
We have been building a house for the past 6 months. I am getting white, inset cabinets with large chrome pulls. Most of my appliances will be hidden by the cabinetry. Of course, I want carrara marble, and I am not sure that there is anything at all as beautiful. I'd like to know if any of you have carrara marble countertops and how it is holding up.

Have you looked at Calacatta quartzite? Might be a bit more expensive, but will stand up to anything and it's beautiful.

We are going to the granite/marble showroom next week so I will be looking for that. I needed suggestions for what to look at besides Carrera, so thanks!

Check out Super White quartzite. It's gorgeous. A bit out of my price range but it's cheaper (and sturdier for a kitchen) than marble!

You can also check out London Grey quartz, it mimics Carrera marble.

I think there is a product called luce di luna (sometimes called aspen white or quartzite bianca) that is a lovely product, but not a true quartzite. I believe Calacatta Macaubus is a "true" quartzite. Hopefully the experts will correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, be sure to research the product you consider so you'll know how durable, stain and etch proof you can expect it to be. You'll see wonderful examples if you search Houzz pictures of "quartzite countertops". I have a dark colored quartzite countertop and it's amazing - I don't think it would be possible to stain, etch, or damage it.

We are also building a home and are installing Honed statuary marble. I have asked the same question you asked so many times. There is no product out there that mimics the real thing. (This of course is a personal opinion) we have spoken to soapy homeowners who have honed marble countertops and don't regret it. Good luck with your decision!

Marble is a "softer" stone, it doesn't hold up as well as granite or quartzite in kitchens. I'd stick with something more durable and put marble in a bathroom where it needs less upkeep.

Just curious, what cabinet pulls did you get? I'm also looking for long chrome ones.

Do you have a picture brookelow? I agree, nothing is as beautiful as a true marble. Calcutta and Carrera are my favorites.

Sophie is right, marble is not the best choice for a kitchen. Check out this guide to counter materials (written just yesterday, good timing!):
http://blog.qualitybath.com/kitchen/kitchen-remodeling/choose-kitchen-counter/
It includes the Super White that Sophie wrote about, as well as the points that Ann made regarding the durability of quartzite.
Good luck!

This is our slab that has not been installed yet. We have been to the slab yard so many times trying to find the perfect slab. They sell a lot of the Carrara and stauary so they rotate through them quickly. The owner of this granite/marble company has marble throughout his kitchen. He gave me the confidence to go with marble. I am sure my marble won't look perfect over time but I am all about patina!

Brookelow, that slab makes my heart skip a beat! Love it! I think I might do a honed marble as well, my designer actually suggested that we hone it as well.

My designer also mentioned how
Much it helps to hone it. I fell in love with the statuary marbles. Love the Carrara also but the Statuary really made my heart skip a beat...

I won't be installing it for a month or so. Things are going slow with our build. Can't wait to see it installed.

What is the exact name?
But, I will be taking this picture with me, so thank you. I'd love to see a picture of a honed marble. If anyone has one, please post it.

reemh3, remember that luce di luna might not be a true quartzite, but still probably quite a bit "tougher" than marble. It is beautiful. Here is a Calacatta quartzite. I believe this is a true quartzite and thus one of the hardest, toughest countertop you can buy. Quartzite won't save you money over marble, it's quite pricey, but it is very able to withstand just about any kind of abuse. You can't scratch it with a sharp knife - it will only dull the knife:) [houzz=

Here is an update. These are the only two slabs of Carrara that did not have major flaws. The first slab is honed, so I will hone the second one as well. This is called Bianca Carrara. I hope these end up looking good. My builder only works with this vendor. So, we don't have much of a choice.
