Need help with Open Floor Plan - flooring and wall color

We just moved into our home and I need help. We have a very open floor plan (LR, DR, Kit. FM). All trim is in oak, and there is a lot of it. There are oak hardwood floors under the carpeting. We will refinish those. What do we put on the lower level? Slate? Tile? Also need help on picking wall colors - and which wall would be accent wall, etc. Haven't a clue on picking colors of walls for that open of a floor plan. I am pretty traditional, but I like color, my husband, not so much - thinks dark colors close a room in. Should we leave all oak trim and paint trim white? I am hesitant to do that, there is so much. The kitchen cabinets will not be replaced at this time - they are oak (of course). This is a little overwhelming due to the openness. Help, please!!!!
