Down draft or overhead draft?

downdraft is what we are leaning towards ... our layout has a full range against the wall, but we were thinking it would be nice to have the cooktop on our island?

I had a Jennair downdraft in an island - a very small island. Had it moved to a new peninsula and could only get another Jennair to replace the 20 yr old one. A drop-in wasn't an option because you need a lot of space, which I didn't have, for the hidden components of one of those pop-up downdraft systems. I was limited to downdraft range unless I spent a lot more money to run the ventilation and up and over and out the ceiling. If you're remodeling, you'll want to consider the costs to re-run the ventilation, the gas lines, electric, etc. From what I've read, the downdraft systems are not more efficient than an overhead vent, don't vent nearly as well. I suppose that depends on how smoky of a cook you are! You just need to consider the cost of all the individual components, they're not cheap, and moving all those connections. And of course, if you like to be the center of attention when you cook?
