Need help updating kitchen cabinets

ishopalot44February 6, 2014
My fiance and I just bought a beautiful home built in 1990. The previous owners really stuck to the 90's theme throughout the entire house. These kitchen cabinets are in great condition. I would hate to tear them out, but they are so outdated. The finish is pretty slick and smooth. The corner cabinets are curved. I'm just not sure if we can reface them. Thoughts?? Thank you!!

That's not "90s". It's a classic high end never dated modern look that you are still seeing be done even more often these days. The only thing that I see that is a false note with the kitchen is the birdcage pulls with the super modern cabinets. I wouldn't think of doing anything with it other than changing out those pulls to something sleeker and more modern. And perhaps new appliances when those have reached the end of their lifespan. That may be a while though. Those old SZ's were built like tanks!

Change the hardware! That can make the biggest difference and it's much less expensive than resurfacing or replacing the cabinets. Best of luck!

I agree with both previous posts. These are high-end cabinets. Refacing will be difficult (though not impossible) because of the curved doors. You would need a contractor who is hooked up with a door manufacturer that can create curved doors (they do exist).

Change the handles and then see if that helps.

You haven't suggested but in case you were thinking of it: don't paint (by which I mean normal paint) These are plastic finishes and not wanting to be painted. There are companies that will spray an epoxy paint and THAT can work well - it won't change the door style but will change the color. If you go that route I'd go for a muted color such as light gray.
