Modern Living Room fireplace update for Tract 1970s home

We live in San Diego in a typical 1970s tract home. I am no designer, but after 6 years of contemplation over our really ugly faux rock fireplace we added a modern affordable element to our living room. This cost us about $900 including labor and materials.
