Hi! i think you definitely have a lovely place! I would recommend first purchasing a console table to go either where the small table is now or on the wall space next to the stairs. Here are a few options:

Warner Decor nice suggestion, I like the 2nd option for console tables. We were thinking about opening up that wall to the kitchen?

Maybe an open bookshelf across from your coat closet would create an "airy hallway" that would keep things open and light, but still give your room some definition.

Take dn wall by front door. Use a rectangle table for dining area. Go a dark wood with 4 leather chairs. High back in a color. Pier One sells. Then get ends use a high back wing back in a fabric. Using color from wall and side chair color. Light is good and looks modern stay in that look. On long wall by table add a long chest. Hard to tell how much room you have between table and wall. Over chest add a big sunburst mirror. 45" hang low. TJMax sells. Is this your only eating area? Looks small. Is a TV going here too? Wall where you have a media would be best for TV. With furn floating in room facing it. Wall color looks good kitchen should be the same. Use palms in ceramic pots to fill corners. Area rugs to define areas. Use color, find a accent color and use around room in rugs pillows, art. Take away rug by front door. A big silk palm in corner by staircase.

That light in ceiling in kitchen will have to go. Then patch. Can't use light there.

In window seat pillows for seat in a accent color. Go roman shades on windows 2 shades darker than walls.

Put a roman or woven shade on kitchen window. A sofa n a dark gray, and two chairs barrel type that swivel, can be leather or fabric. If fabric go a print. Using accent color. A long dark type chest 6-7ft for TV. Dark wood. Storage. Get a big screen 50" or bigger. Big TV very in now. N fact the small 40" look, funny now. This is a nice room and can be made to look very beautiful, fun.

Are there any structural loads coming down from the second floor anywhere in that wall??

Lovely -I echo the call for some kind of screen - it could be parallel to the divider wall or perpendicular to the stair and the entry just before the opening / sort of a free standing entry piece / bookshelf. Something in the wood tone of the stair and banister .. . so just opening the door doesn't give anyone a full view of the home's public spaces. If they header the doorway it won't matter the load.

Took out the cabinets in kitchen over island... Getting opinion on wall? Structure, load bearing all that. Wish someone knew an inexpensive Architect in Chicago area?

Have you talked to any architects in your area? If you have not, call a few and talk with them, you may be surprised, they don't bite.

Not a load bearing wall, working on this project, wondering what to add to the kitchen corner?

A laydown piece - counter height with storage underneath for backpacks, totes, shopping bags, blackboard above, outlet for charging station. Maybe a pad mount.

No storage but great for the larger space - maybe with a banquette?

Agreed with an area rug and half height storage unit to define the foyer area.
