Hello, I've having a difficult time making a decision about window treatments for our combined living and dining room. The room is long and narrow (14 ft x 26) and has two narrow windows on the west wall, one larger window on the north wall, a wall on the south and stairs to the upper floor, a hallway and a closed off kitchen on the east.My question: Is it okay to have two different window treatments in the same room? I have cellular shades flanked by soft gold drapes on the two narrow windows and deeper gold curtains with a charcoal grey design on the large window. The charcoal grey design looks great with my black dining chairs and helps to balance out the room since I have a charcoal velvet sectional in the living room. My sister thinks I should use identical drapes throughout the room since it is a combined living and dining area but I like how my setup looks. I'll try to attach images later but in the meantime, have you seen any photos featuring a great room with two different colours/styles of drapes?
Thank you!
Emily Hurley Photos would definitely help with specifics for your space, since it can be so hard to picture, but my gut would tell me that if the space is undivided, I would generally have the same draperies on both windows.
TanCalGal Most combined rooms show the same drapes...and for a small home / condo even the same drapes in bedrooms. Your window shapes are very different, the windows are on different walls (you don't say what treatment you have on the South window) and the treatments seem to blend. I think if you like the look, it is probably fine. You could always remove the gold drapes and just have the cel. shades, that would blend with the other window, too. Here is a photo of LR / DR treatments that use same fabric, but are not exactly the same
bellinghamanna Thanks for your replies. I had neighbours over last night and they loved the look of the room with the simpler gold drapes on the narrow windows and the embellished gold drapes on the picture window. They agreed it was different but effective. I did try putting the same soft gold drapes on the picture window but the effect was very washed out--the colour blended too much with the Shaker Beige walls. The embellished drapes turned the entire north wall into an accent wall and brought attention to our beautiful black chairs with their fleur-de-lis design on the backrests. I've decided to go with my gut and keep the embellished drapes for the large window since it adds so much to the room. (I did try having the same embellished curtains for the other two windows but the effect was over-powering and too dark. It's a north-facing room without any south windows except for the front entry door down a long hallway from this room.)
