We are considering painting the trim and fireplace in our living room, but I am reluctant to paint the doors, especially the pocket doors. We are thinking of painting only the floor and window trim and leaving the frame around and pocket doors alone. Haven't chosen a new paint colour for the walls yet. Any suggestions?

First off, awesome transformation. You obviously have a decorators eye. As for decor, I would add some color. It depends on what makes you feel at home.
If you like the earth tones, how about some colors like: malachite or jade green, carnelian red or a vibrant burnt orange, varying tones of peach, or amethyst. A simple grouping of colorful glass vases of varying sizes would draw the eye to the backsplash (which is gorgeous). To draw the eye up,(I think someone already mentioned this), some crown molding or maybe run a clear rope light on top of the cabinets for a little uplighting glow.
I prefer summer water colors (pale aquas, lavender, greens, and then accenting with bold complimentary colors like tangerine) my base colors are varied light grays.
The person with the bold rug idea is spot on.

Instead of those little tiles on the wall, I properly use glass , the glass can be the same color of the door , or the color of the bench .. That will makes the kitchen looks bigger and neater " easy to clean too..

This is lovely! I also agree that the microwave isn't dated- plus, putting in a dark color might make it a major focal point, contending with the fantastic backsplash.

The kitchen looks lovely!

Time for the right accessories to pull this all together. Like a beautiful woman preparing to go out- you don't need too much.

BTW, At first the look microwave is distracting because it unwittingly pops out as a focal point, however, it looks like the other appliances are also white and the photo may be misleading. Keep the white!

However, pattern on the area rug is not in the same league as the rest of the kitchen, not enough dimension, plus it draws the eye in the wrong direction. Use the rug elsewhere.

My suggestion: A window treatment. A fabric in the right pattern will add softness and texture while hiding the overhang on the outside of the house. The right fabric will pull everything together while providing anchor for other accessories.

When looking for your fabric, I would treat the tiled back splash as a solid and use a patterned fabric. To continue the line of the soffit, I would go with a fabric with darker background.

I would like to see a basket on the counter and a sisal rug on the floor - a sisal with blackish border would relate to the faucet and door pulls.

Oh, for your final photo, don't forget the Granny Smith apples in counter basket!

I know what you mean Shanareed4 about the color. It's probably bisque. I painted my uppers antique white and the 20yo black microwave suddenly stood out like a sore thumb. A local couple had a bisque microwave that even looks to be the same model just like yours only a few years old, they were changing out for SS, so I bought it $30 and now it fits in with my antique white cabinets.

1. The bright white microwave against the off-white cabinets makes the cabinets look dingy. Can you swap out for a black microwave?

2. Also consider painting the trim on the window black

3. Probably too late for this, but the modern backsplash looks out of place with the ultra-traditional cabinets.

you did an awesome job. I love that you matched the cabinets to the bisque appliances. I am so tired of seeing stainless that its beginning to become overused. I think what you did gives it a much cleaner look. The only thing left to do is accessories and that so depends on your personal taste. Maybe pick something that coordinates with your tile.

A neutral colored trailered shade would provide privacy/light control. Or you could choose a solid colored fabric for a punch of color. A print fabric might be too busy with your very textured backsplash. You have a pretty appealing kitchen - enjoy!!

It looks beautiful! Such a nice change. I love the color choices of the glass tile, counter and cabinets. I have to vote for changing out the microwave though. For me, it's a visual eyesore on an otherwise gorgeous makeover. If possible, take it out and put up a vent hood more in keeping with the style of the kitchen. If there is no where else to put a countertop microwave near the kitchen, I would find a stainless steel one, with as sleek an appearance on the exterior as possible.

Maybe even some pretty geraniums near the window. I'm really excited for your beautiful transformation!

Very nice upgrades. Great look. The only thing I would suggest (as others have) is the addition of a few colorful items on the counters. Whatever color or colors you like. Not too many object, just a few.. A cookie jar or large plate on a stand or canisters--whatever you like. I prefer the window without a valance and I love your current hardware.

Nice choices. If you look at the very first pic of the "before" kitchen, you will see that the cabinets are bisque. The fridge in that pic is white and the contrast is noticeable. Probably in real life, they blend nicely. I don't know if you have under cabinet lighting, but I recently changed my over the range microwave to a stainless vent hood and added under cabinet lighting and a white glass subway backsplash. I bought a smaller microwave and had it installed in my pantry cabinet. It works great....after I got over trying to open a non-existent
door on the new range hood. Would you consider painting the soffit over your cabinets the same color as your cabinets? just some thoughts. Enjoy.

Looks great. The cabinet color is really great and I wish I could accomplish that exact color on the cabinets in our "bought from someone else with someone else's taste" house. I agree that something at the top of the window would be nice, but I disagree with pretty much every suggestion here. You have so little light coming into the room and already have so manny "blocks" in your space that I would suggest a light and airy balloon valance made of a fine quality lace.

The colors are beautiful together! Maybe tile the cabinet sides by the cooktop for fire protection? Most appliance manufacturers require a certain amount of space between cooking surface and cabinet, often about 6". I agree with stainless microwave mentioned above. It's a beautiful space :)

Fantastic transformation! A couple of words of advice since you asked. I would change some of the knobs - there are too many of the same. Can some of them be changed for one hole pulls instead? Please also consider replacing the microwave - the white is bringing the whole wall down. I see that your stove top is white but even a black microwave would look better against the cabinets (and change the stove top too if possible). And of course, a window treatment to finish the room. Good luck from Montreal!

Luv the cabinet colors, looks like the glazed biscoti I have been eyeing up. I would change out the appliances to stanless steel. The white & the cream seem a little off otherwise it's a beautiful job!!!

looks really great! Only suggestion for functionality and form would be plumb in gas and get a stainless range and replace the microwave with a nice stainless hood. With out seeing the rest of the layout of your kitchen, i'm not sure where a microwave can go, but I suspect there is a spot. Switch to stainless on the microwave as well. Also paint your window trim the same shade as the wall or a complimentary color. Those curtains..... eeeesh :( Maybe just do a simple cornice in the same color as the walls. Is the crown molding the same color as the cabinets or lighter? Might be hard to paint to match because of the weathered look on the cabinets, may just want to go the same shade as the painted wall for the crown too. An oil rubbed bronze switch plate cover would tie in nicely with your hardware.

Really nice. Personally, I would have updated the appliances to stainless. Also a splash of bold colour like cranberry is needed maybe in a valance over the window and in a mat. I too agree that a peninsula or something would fit nicely.

Looks nice, but now you need to add a pop of color, either red, yellow, orange or turquoise. One color to carry through and into adjoining rooms.

Great job! Very impressive DIY --- I would also go with a nice natural roman shade
So as not to detract from the backsplash and counters. Question: did you hire someone
To take down original cabinets, backsplash etc and if so how expensive was this?

Love it, and being short too, I understand the microwave dilemma; my husband is in a wheelchair, and we removed the microwave and had a counter top model; in place is a chimney style fan; an option would be to have a exhaust fan, hidden by the same style cabinetry. My only other suggestion would be to copy the crown molding on top of the cabinets.

You did an amazing job! Great eye for decorating!! If you want to add just some finishing touches, I agree with the crown moulding around the top of the cabinetry.....and a nice roman shade and sisal runner on the floor. While I love the pattern you selected on the rug you have now, it just doesn't seem to go with the new decor of the kitchen. Pattern seems more traditional acanthus, while decor seems more transitional/modern. But you did an amazing job of updating that kitchen!! kudos to you!!

It's really nice except it needs window treatments.

Roman shade can help with light control (if needed), they can also add a bit of softness. Your kitchen looks wonderful, don't let negative people make you second guess your choices!
I would look into wood surrounds that might work with the brick fireplace (if you want to keep the brick). I would not paint the wood doors or trim in your living room, but it is your home and you are the ones living there!

I think it looks great, but would be a little concerned having cabinets on the counter top right next to the cook top. Seems like a fire hazard and tough to keep clean.

This is a great site for getting ideas. But your backsplash has the color of the counter top and the cabinets matched perfectly. It looks too matchy matchy. Most great kitchens have four areas. the floor, the cabinets, the counter top and the backsplash. They change colors, textures, shades. I just think the backsplash is not right.

One other thing. The crown molding corners are not right. I know it makes doing crown molding easy to do but it makes it look like a DIY project. Also don't put a pattern window cover that is really too much.

This is a great site for ideas, the homeowner went from the 80's to 2014 with this kitchen. Her comment was "does the new kitchen look ok or do I need something else?". She is saying that it is not right yet. This reminds me of a woman with a new hairdo. People will tell her it is great but think it is too long or short or the wrong color. The kitchen is at 95% help her get to 110%.

fredm51 is right. If simplicity is the goal, then you are fine with the way it isl. I would introduce another color unlike those in the kitchen with a fabric valance at the window to soften. Add a few accessories in colors from the fabric.
Classic Informality.

Great job on this and I like the neutral tones. My only suggestion like many above would be to re-visit the microwave. Otherwise, looks great!
