How would you fix this fireplace mantel? Need help ASAP please!!

We added the mantel and corbels to this fireplace. We debated where to put the corbels. I don't think they look right. Any suggestions for how to fix this?

Should they be off the marble to the sides on the wall, with the mantel shelf lengthened?

Should they be moved toward the center?

Should they be removed completely? Will the mantel shelf "floating" look okay?

Other options??

Ignore the color of the wall etc and note that the brass will be painted black.

Thank you!!

I think they sould be on the outside of the granite. If you look at other pictures of simiar mantle, that's what you see, and that's why it doesn't look right to you.

I would add a panel of wood below the corbels, so it looks like a column and would frame the marble. It looks a little top heavy to me. Good luck!

We really can't add a wood panel down each side because of the raised hearth, I don't think ??!

Center the corbels on the marble like in the one pictured and the corbels and mantel will look more balanced and less topheavy. :)

I think smo123 means to put the wood panel on the outside of the hearth.

Take a minute and go through photos of mantle by clicking on the photos tab at the top of the page, and searching 'mantles' to get an idea of what smo123 and I are referring to. I'd like to some, but I'm not having any luck with it....

Happyasaclam - I think we aren't allowed by code to put wood that close to the firebox but otherwise the pic you linked is perfect.

Hayleydaniels and smo123 - the woodworker guy said there isn't an appropriate vertical support that's thin enough to end before the gas key on the left and that skinny ones would look ridiculous. We have the verticle wood pieces in our master and they're fabulous

I think the corbels need to be thicker, heavier looking,

Can you put wood panels on the two sides, cutting out for the key, and the corbels on top like some of the other designs are showing?

Can you remove the corbels and add columns outside of the marble face to match the width of the space between the edge of the marble and the bottom of the mantle? It looks like the current corbels are too wide to fit into that space, but you may be able to fit a narrower set installed on the face of two vertical columns. Try sketching a few possible solutions to scale to help yourself visualize.

I think this is what brio interior is suggesting but without the corbels.

I think the main issue is the scale of the mantel, it is too wide for your current configuration. If the base of the mantel matched the width of the outside edges of the corbels in their current position (just barely overhanging), you would be in good shape.

Hi giaksch, I meant wood columns so the fireplace would resembles this. I think it works well with a raised hearth.
