Remove Bulkhead above cabinets - Leave just a section over sink?

I currently have a bulkhead over my kitchen cabinets. See first picture attached. It is hiding plumbing located over the sink. I want to redo the kitchen completely in 5 years (and plumbing/bulkhead issues will all go away) but in the meantime, I wanted to remove the bulkhead with the exception of above the sink - I am thinking this will create a "valance" look? I drew a quick sketch with the bulkhead over the sink remaining (see second picture) and showing crown molding at ceiling and top of cabinets that will wrap around the bulkhead. I am hoping the pendant lights and the look of a "valance" will not make this look weird for the next 5 years till I can save and redo the entire thing! Appreciate any thoughts and suggestions you have!

Ours had AC/Heat ducts in there so make sure before you tear into them. Please check out "Crown on Soffits" on Houzz. Some of the pictures have trim all the way down to the cabinets and they are really impressive. Saw one the other day in discussions where someone wanted a short term fix and it was really beautiful. agevm - I did cut a small hole in each side and determined there was only the plumbing above the sink. The rest is just a cosmetic bulkhead. I will check out the crown on soffits section. Thanks!

Very nice drawing. But why not just dress up the soffit as it is now with some crown molding and trim as suggested by agevm. And then take it all down in 5 years? It's kind of a big messy job.

agree with Madden on this one. some trim or crown added would make a difference. I tore out an old wall oven where the soffit extended past the cabinet soffit, and let me tell you, it was a mess! and, the ceiling is still mismatched where i took that bit of soffit down :( Also, just wanted to tell you that i think your kitchen is adorable with good bones. I bet those "old" cabinets are solid wood.
