Love the cabinet color?

Can you tell me more about the finish? Is it a stain or paint, maybe a glaze? What kind of wood are the cabinets? I have custom solid oak cabinets, but they're dated. I've sanded them down but can't decide on "the new look". I would appreciate any inspirational advice:)

Hi. These cabinets are a painted finish with a glaze. I believe the wood is birch. The base color is gray, with an ebony glaze applied over it.

Oak cabinets have an open grain, which will express pretty heavily with a dark glaze like this.
