I'm a huge fan of swing arm sconces in place of bedside lamps. They can be mounted at the optimal reading height and it frees up space on the table that would've otherwise been taken up by a lamp. You can see this in most of the bedroom designs in my portfolio on Houzz.
Otherwise my bedside always has a stack of books.

i like a bedside table with a drawer. i have a great old (small) rolltop desk with cubbies. it is a pleasant surprise and has plenty of room for those items you want to hide..like earplugs and glasses, and books

My temporary bedside is a small dresser about 6" taller than the bed, and I put a vatload of craft supplies in the drawers. On top is the temporary light that needs to stay on, aimed at wall, so we can get up at night without busting a face to go to bathroom.

Hubby's is a more traditional nightstand but has three drawers and the previous owners replaced the top with plywood. I put his heating pad in the bottom, middle is misc crapola and the top one holds his TENS machine and his various reading material. At the back top I fastened down a power strip and all his gadgets that need leashing and feeding can dock (Ipad, cellphone, tablet, headset) I can also snag all his used dishes on the way out of the bedroom so he doesn't make a huge mound like everywhere else....

karemore55, I had hotflashes in my late 20's and had all my plumbing out not long after that. I do not miss personal summers. I do love that card.

If anyone wants to know what a hot flash feels like... doc had me on vitamin suppliments for awhile, and hubby accidentally took one of my niacin... (vit b3). If you are not used to taking them... you will flash hot, you will flush, and around your joints especially knees and elbows, you will itch. You will break out and sweat. Subtract the itch; and you have a hot flash. Except it takes a few hours for it to wear off. I gave him no sympathy, but the hydrocortisone cream to rub on his itchy spots (doesn't help but gave him something to do) and told him to go take a nap and sleep it off.

Genevieve, do you live in a space station, and if so, how do you keep the things on the bedside table from floating away? Did you start the fashion for hanging bedside lamps, and do they look like sconces when they float? Do you have to hold any partner down all night, or do you have to strap them in?
