Need Ideas for our Kitchen/Family Room Remodel
reneerosie
March 10, 2014
We are going to be remodeling our Kitchen/Family Room very soon and need ideas to replace/redo/remove a monster breakfast bar that separates the rooms. There is a door off the kitchen next to this bar that leads outside to a deck. There is a step down into the family room next to a fireplace. We want the rooms to flow easily. My husband does the cooking & he doesn't want to feel like he is by himself in the kitchen. Any and all ideas are welcome. Thanks!

That looks really dangerous. Spend the money and get a couple hours of design help. This is not a project for amateurs.

Yes, unless I'm missing something. The bar stools look like they could go right off the edge of the tile.

Can you show a pic facing the bar onto the family room?

Oh, it does look dangerous, but we are in the process of tear down & with no kids in the house we are not worried!

We are sure we want seating on both sides & storage. Just looking for new ideas as we seem stuck.

Thanks again for your input.

Rocketjcat - I hope this is what you meant! Ignore our new bathroom flooring stacked on the counter!

I think a bookcase partition might work well for you here. Similar to the photo below. The nice thing about it is its dual purpose - cookbook storage and a casual seat to join the chef!

Renee can you build up the kitchen floor so the step down is closer to the fireplace? So the kitchen and an island are on one level with the seating facing toward the cook? Love the bookcase room divider idea. If you coud extend the upper floor, and didn't plan seating at the room divider, it might give you enough room. Just a thought.

That FP is gorgeous!! Could you replace the tile/ carpet with wood floors in both areas? Then create a step down across the entire room. I also like the bookcase photo-- the style goes with your FP too.

Pony wall with a rotating lift TV would be a nice choice.

The plan is to change the flooring to wood in all the rooms. We are going to be doing something to the fireplace too, we have a couple of ideas. It's really the flow from the kitchen into the family room that we are unsure of. Love all the great ideas. Thanks!!

I think that moving the seating to the lower side will work well. If the seats lower down are sized for a bar height (42") then you can hopefully have a normal 36" high counter on the kitchen side. Good luck!

I was going to say a pony wall but the open book cases look great. However, a pony walk might give you more furniture layout options in the family room. Looks like there is plenty of room in the kitchen for a table.

If this is the only area that you have to eat, then I would move the stools to the other side in the living room, maybe some paint. If you have a dining area, I say take the whole thing out. Would change the flooring in the kitchen, it will make a big difference with the overall look of the room.
