How To Light Large Family Room Without Recessed Lighting
March 13, 2014 in Design Dilemma
I need to light (in the next 24 hours) a 22' x 33' bonus/family room with NO recessed lighting. The ceiling in the central portion of the room is 11' and slopes to 9" on the sides. Two ceiling fans (w/o lights) will center on the stairs and window opposite the stairs. How do I provide good general lighting for the space? The electricians and lighting shops are clueless. They always use cans.

It's important to layer your lighting! The four layers are ambient, task, accent and decorative.

Ambient lighting is the general lighting you want. Here's a guide to that:
Some fixtures you can use to get ambient lighting include ceiling flush mounts, ceiling semi-flush mounts and chandeliers. Large ceiling pendants could also work well, especially on the sloped ceilings--some pendants come with the tools you need to mount to a sloped ceiling.

You can read up on the other layers here, too:
