We have sliding doors planned for our built in wardrobes, what depth should a built in be to allow adequate space for adult sized clothes to hang without rubbing when door slides across.

24" from the back to the inside of the door assuming hanging rod is 11 - 12" from back wall.

24" if you have a choice. I've gotten away with 22" when there other spacial considerations though.

Ours are 22", rod is 11". But 24" would've been better for more bulkly clothing (winter coats, e.g)
