I need help decorating my new livingroom!

Cortney ScottMarch 19, 2014
I just purchased a new home and I need help decorating the living room. I cannot seem to put anything together. The furniture in there is the previous owners. So there is currently not any furniture in the room. It does however have brown carpets and beige walls. I do plan on keeping the wall color and carpet how it is. Any suggestions would be helpful!

I like chairs on each side of fireplace and sofa against the wall or sofa facing the fireplace. There are many choices. Here are 2 sofas facing and that looks good too.

Make the fireplace your focal point and use the symmetry of the room for placement of furniture. Coffee table Central in line with fireplace, then 2 sofas in line with each window side on.

Also drapes that hang one side of each window (drawn back against the walls) plus a rug under coffee table to break up the expanse of floor. Side tables at sofa ends to have statement lamps which will look great in front of windows. Hope this helps.

Also, I'm looking to get new furniture. What color would anyone suggest? I'm not really sure what color would look okay with the wall color and the carpet color? Thanks for all of the help!

grey, cream, silver, black - but go for some pattern as well as some texture as the carpet and walls are plain.

What style do you want, traditional, contemporary, formal, large family or entertaining a lot, how will you use the room, will there be a TV??? Answering some questions would really help!

Hi! I think that drapes would most definitely set the tone for the room! Here are a few cute and affordable suggestions:

http://deciture.com/shop/decor/pier-1-imports/scallop-curtain-blue-gray/ (love these because they are subtle and calming)

http://deciture.com/shop/decor/world-market/citrus-ikat-curtain/ (this color is very popular right now, and would add a pop of color and pattern to your area)

http://deciture.com/shop/decor/world-market/gold-and-teal-aberdeen-curtain/ (my personal favorite!)

Hope this helps!

I am wanting something a little more contemporary. I don't think I want to put a tv in there.. It's just my fiancé and I and we are planning to use the bonus room for entertainment and lounging purposes.

I love the blue/grey. I think I am leaning more towards a grey sofa. I have come across these. Do you think they would look okay with the blue/grey drapes?

Here are two rooms from your ideabook. The first you noted you liked the colors, the second you liked everything. You could pretty much duplicate either of these rooms in your space.

I'd like to see your sofa facing the fireplace with a comfy armchair on either end. If you love the greens, use them for curtains and accessories; it would certainly go with the beiges in the room now.

If you want a bit more drama, copy the darker room. Paint the walls a medium tone, then go monochromatic with browns from cream to rich chocolate, lots of texture, and gold frames, mirrors, and lamps.

Do you have a copy of the floor plan you could upload? The pano pic is distorting, to say the least. Proportion counts, so we need to have a realistic feel for how big, or small, the space is. If you don't have the floor plan, can you rough out one with accurate measurements for openings, windows, and FP?
